Outdoor Fun for Groups

Let's go outside!  It's spring, take advantage of that beautiful weather.  Do you have an outside area in your school that you can use for group?  Or a group of children on a playdate? Here are some great outdoor game ideas:

Parking Spot (aka musical chairs):  Mark off a large square area outisde on the pavement with chalk or use carpet squares for parking spots.  The children will be "cars" or "Jeeps". When you call out an action they have to perform it until you say "Park!".  Call out jump, the children jump around- try not to bump into anyone!   They can skip, hop, jump, run, gallop, or walk.

Variations:  - Mark spots on the floor and call these spots the jeeps.  Now your children are the safari animals.  They have to move around like the animal you call out when you say Jeep, they have to run to a spot.

- Make them think while playing! If you call out tiger should they run fast or slow?  If you call frog should they run or jump? If you call out bear should they walk on two legs or arms and legs?

- "Cooperative Jeeps" as jeeps or places are eliminated, ask children to "share" spaces. How many can fit? Maybe just a toe or hand is enough to be safe.

Animal Stampede!

A variation of Red Light, Green Light.  In a large area outside, draw a start line, where your children will line up, you will stand about 15-20 feet away from them.

You can call yourself the park ranger or zookeeper.  Your children have to listen for what animal you will call as your back is turned to them.  " I am going to see the tigers!"  They have to run as fast as a tiger until you turn around when they should Stop!

If they don't stop, they have to go back to start.  Begin the game slow with turtle walks, crab crawls, then move to tiger runs!

Use these story starters to spark creativity and imagination, work on sentence structure, practice handwriting/drawing, be silly or pass the time (on a car ride, in waiting room, check-out line or maybe while just having breakfast!)
