What is sensory processing?

The term refers to the process in which the nervous system receives a message from the senses and responds with an appropriate motor and behavioral response.

What is Sensory Processing Disorder?

A simple definition for a complex condition: where the nervous system does not organize and respond appropriately to the messages received from the bodies senses.

Kids love stencils. They're drawn to them. Stencils offer the promise of creating a picture that really looks like something (something that they could not draw on their own)! But tracing around the edges of a stencil is difficult and often frustrating. So here's a neat trick - place the paper on the wall. Tape it in place for those that need it. Then place the stencil on top and ask the child to color in the stencil. Use crayons or pencils with back and forth movements.
The result is a shaded-in drawing that is easier to do and looks pretty good! You can also tape the stencil in place, if needed, but holding it in place is a great upper extremity workout!

A Fun Activity

This is a fun and simple activity but it makes those little arms work!. Supplies
Three - 26oz. containers of table salt
One per child - 8 oz. clear bottle (empty plastic water bottles work well)
One per child - medium-sized bowls or tupperware or shoe boxes
Large pieces of sidewalk chalk (various colors)
Measuring cup or large spoon
Funnels (can make out of oaktag)
First, pour enough salt to cover the bottom of each bowl. Each child gets a bowl with salt and a piece of chalk. With the bowl in front of them, rub the chalk up and down pressing into the bottom of the bowl and over the salt. The harder they press the darker the salt will get!!!When the salt is colored, pour each color into a larger bowl and continue to color the remaining salt. When all salt is colored, each child gets a bottle, with the funnel in the top, have the kids scoop up the salt and pour into the funnel. Layer the colors, make a pattern, decorate the bottle with stickers or google eyes and a nose, write names on the bottles, the options are endless!
